Introduction: 

Users can setup a Holistic or an Analytic Rubric in Brightspace. This article describes how to setup each. 

Note: You must publish a rubric before it can be used in assessments. Make sure to change the rubric’s status from Draft to Published.

Additionally you can add a rubric to submission folders, learning objective, quiz surveys and discussion topics, see Add a Rubric to Activities and Add Rubric to an Assignment.

Holistic Rubric 

  1. First, tap Course Admin from the top navbar and then select Rubrics from the Assessment section.
  2. Next, tap New Rubric to add a new rubric to your course assessment.

  3. As a result, this will open a new page. Insert a Name for your rubric.
  4. Next, ensure that the Type is set to Holistic, if not simply tap the drop-down to select.
  5. Select the Initial Number of levels you need for the rubric. Levels determine the number of rows for the rubric. The single criterion, and its associated description and feedback, displays as a row.
  6. Insert details and information about this rubric in the Description area. 
  7. When finished tap the Close button.
    The Edit Rubric page is displayed for the Holistic Rubric type. Arrows point to fields mentioned above.

Analytic Rubric

  1. First, tap Course Admin from the top navbar and then select Rubrics from the Assessment section.
  2. Next, tap New Rubric to add a new rubric to your course assessment.

  3. As a result, this will open a new page. Insert a Name for your rubric.
  4. Next, ensure that the Type is set to Analytic, if not simply tap the drop-down to select.
    The Edit Rubric screen shows the top section of the page. Arrows point to the Name field and Type button.
  5. Select the number of levels and criteria you need for the rubric. Levels display in the columns of your rubric and are associated with the number of points; criteria display in the rows and define how points will be allocated.
    • The plus sign above Criteria 1 will add another row for additional criteria. 
    • The plus sign to the far right next to Level 1 will add another column for an additional level.
      The Edit Rubric page is shown with just the rubric criteria and levels. Arrows point to the create criteria and create level buttons.
  6. Select your Overall Scoring. Each submission is assigned a level of achievement based on its overall rubric score.
    Overall Score section has been enlarged to show the points associated with each level.
  7. Finally, scroll down the page and insert details about this rubric using the Description field. 
  8. When finished, tap the Close button.

Add a Rubric to Activities

  1. First, tap Content from the top navbar. 
  2. Next, using the left menu, select the item/material you would like to add a rubric to. 
  3. Now, tap the button in the body that takes you to the appropriate area (Go to Quiz, Go to Assignment, etc.).
  4. Then Edit the material. 
  5. Next, scroll to the Rubrics area and then click Add Rubric to add an existing rubric to the activity.
  6. Select the rubric you want to use and click Add Selected. If you have not already created a rubric, click Create Rubric to create on and add it to the activity.

  7. The rubric is now added and displays in the rubrics section. When you are ready, click Save and Close.


Attach Rubric to an Assignment

  1. Start from the course home page, click Assignments.
  2. Next, from the context menu of the assignment, tap Edit.
  3. Within the Attachments area, tap the Add Attachment drop-down button and then choose Existing Activity.
  4. As a result a pop-up dialog box will be displayed, scroll down the list and choose Rubrics.
  5. Next, select the rubric you would like to associate with your assignment.
  6. As a result, the rubric you selected will be attached to the assignment. Tap Save and Close to exit and return to Assignments.
